How this personal loan repayment calculator works

The calculator models a standard amortising loan: interest is charged on the outstanding balance each repayment period and the rest of the repayment reduces principal. If you finance the establishment fee, that fee is added to the opening balance and can therefore also attract interest.

InputHow the calculator uses it
Loan amountThe cash amount you expect to borrow.
Interest rateThe annual rate you enter, divided across the selected repayment periods.
Loan termHow long the loan is scheduled to run if you make the standard repayments.
Establishment feeEither added to the financed balance or treated as an upfront cost.
Monthly account feeAdded to the estimated cost for the time the loan remains open.
Extra repaymentApplied in addition to the scheduled principal-and-interest payment.

Personal loan repayment example

Suppose you borrow $15,000 for 3 years at 12.95% p.a., with a $250 establishment fee financed into the balance and a $5 monthly account fee. With fortnightly repayments, the calculator estimates the repayment and then separates the interest and fees so you can compare the total borrowing cost.

The 12.95% rate above is only an example input, not a market rate or recommendation. Use the actual rate and fees from a lender's disclosure when comparing offers.

Compare personal loans by total cost, not rate alone

A lower advertised interest rate does not always produce the cheapest loan. Establishment fees, monthly fees, optional insurance, early repayment charges and a longer term can change the total amount you pay.

Regular repaymentCheck whether the weekly, fortnightly or monthly amount fits your budget.
Total interestA longer term can reduce each payment while increasing the amount of interest paid over time.
Total feesInclude establishment and ongoing fees from the actual lender disclosure.

Consumer guidance: Consumer Protection — understand the true cost explains that lenders must disclose items such as the interest rate, total interest and fees/charges.

Personal loan interest and fees in New Zealand

Consumer credit lenders must follow New Zealand credit law and responsible-lending requirements. The exact rules depend on the loan. High-cost loans have additional legal limits, so this general personal-loan calculator should not be used to test whether a particular high-cost contract is legally compliant.

What happens if I make extra repayments?

If the lender allows extra payments to reduce principal without a charge, paying the balance down earlier can reduce future interest and shorten the loan. Enter an extra amount above to compare the modelled payoff time and interest saving.

Check the loan contract first. Some fixed or specialist credit arrangements can have early repayment costs or different interest-calculation rules.

Personal Loan Calculator vs Loan Calculator NZ

Use this page when you are comparing an unsecured personal loan and want common personal-loan fees included. Use the broader Loan Calculator NZ for general amortising loans where the borrowing type is not specifically a personal loan. Keeping the two tools separate prevents assumptions for one loan type being mistaken for another.

Personal Loan Repayment Calculator NZ FAQs

How much is a $10,000 personal loan per month?

It depends on the annual interest rate, loan term and fees. Enter $10,000 as the amount, choose Monthly and add the actual lender rate and fees to calculate an estimate.

How much is a $20,000 personal loan per fortnight?

Enter $20,000, select Fortnightly, and use the proposed interest rate and term. The calculator will show the fortnightly repayment plus estimated total interest and fees.

Does this include establishment fees?

Yes. You can enter an establishment fee and choose whether it is added to the loan balance or paid separately.

Can extra repayments reduce personal loan interest?

Often yes, if extra payments reduce principal and the contract allows them without an offsetting charge. Confirm the lender's early repayment terms.

Is the result an approval or loan quote?

No. It is a calculation based on the numbers you enter. A lender decides eligibility and provides the actual rate, fees, terms and disclosure.

Why does my lender's repayment differ?

The lender may calculate interest daily, use different payment timing, finance different fees, round repayments differently or include product-specific charges not entered here.
